About the Role:
As a Cook, you will play an important role in preparing and serving nutritious, high-quality meals that support resident health, comfort, and enjoyment. Working under the direction of the Chef, General Manager, or designate, you will help ensure food service excellence while supporting daily kitchen operations, food safety, and resident satisfaction. Your role is pivotal in championing exemplary food service delivery that enhances the quality of life and peace of mind for residents and their guests.
Compensation: $19.59/hr
Shift: Casual, must be available on evenings and weekends
Key Responsibilities:
- Under the direction of the Chef or Designate, prepare nourishing, varied, and balanced meals and snacks using standardized recipes and a rotating cyclical menu plan.
- Help ensure residents receive high-quality food service that meets corporate standards and dietary guidelines.
- Support daily kitchen operations, including food storage, inventory control, and safe food handling procedures.
- Follow safe food-handling protocols, policies, and procedures when preparing meals, serving food, cleaning tables, and washing dishes to maintain a safe and positive dining experience for residents and their guests.
- Collaborate with the dietician, under the direction of the General Manager or Designate and in accordance with resident service plans, to support special diets and therapeutic meal requirements.
- Prepare daily snacks, baked goods, and beverages.
- Work with site leadership to engage residents in meal and snack preparation as part of the assisted living recreational program while maintaining Food Safe practices.
- In the Chef's absence, facilitate informal meetings, such as "Chef's Club," to discuss food preparation, meal planning, and dining services.
- Build positive relationships with residents, gather feedback regarding food choices, and help drive continuous improvement in food quality and service.
- Participate in food service evaluations, quality improvement initiatives, kitchen and dining room audits, and budget adherence activities.
- Maintain kitchen equipment and small wares in good working order and report equipment concerns or replacement needs to the Chef or Designate.
- Take direction from the Chef and consistently follow safe food and kitchen practices
Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications & Certifications
- Food Safe - Level II certification is required.
- Experience in volume cooking, preferably in a restaurant environment.
- Formal culinary training is an asset.
Knowledge, Skills, & Experience:
- Solid understanding of customer centred service provision consistent with the intent and philosophy of assisted living and in support of exemplary service delivery.
- Ability to organize and prepare nutritious and appealing meals with minimal supervision and respond to the changing needs and preferences of residents.
- Interest and motivation to enhance cooking and kitchen management skills under the direction of a Chef.
- Using proper judgement in terms of food preparation and safety.
- Knowledge of provincial health, sanitation, and safety regulations.
